I didn’t 'give up' drinking, I changed my lifestyle
The Afters has never just been about giving something up 'alcohol'.
It's about a mindset shift that helps you find your happy.
That might look completely alcohol free.
Or it might look like being more mindful, cutting back, and feeling more in control, rather than on autopilot.
For me, removing alcohol was a turning point
Not because that was the end goal…
but because of what it gave me.
It gave me a clear focus.
It broke the cycle I was stuck in.
It created space for things I'd been trying to build for a long time.
Routine.
Energy.
Clarity.
It was a key factor… but it wasn't the whole story.
Because it's not just about what you take away
It's about what you build in its place.
I didn't just stop doing something…
I started doing things differently.
And this is the key part of my story. Sobriety wasn't and isn't my goal. My goal is to live a life that makes me happy and feel good.
The 5 things that helped with that
-
Setting a goal
Not forever. Just something to aim towards that gave me a focus without feeling overwhelming. -
Introducing a routine
Simple things that gave my days structure and helped me feel accomplished and gave me a dopamine hit. -
Holding myself accountable
Putting things in place that kept me on track (part of the reason I started my TikTok journal), especially when motivation dipped. -
Surrounding myself with knowledge and positive influences
Understanding my habits and being around people on a similar path. Don't underestimate the power of community. I know first hand what that looks like when you lose that. -
Replacing my idea of fun
Finding new ways to switch off, socialise and enjoy myself that actually felt better after, not just during. I don't know where I would be without my campervan and creating that space for myself to change what I did to have fun and relax. This might look different for you, but it was something that absolutely helped me on my own journey.
Simple, but not always easy
When you're stuck in that cycle, it can feel like everything needs to change overnight.
It doesn't.
It starts with one small change, then another… and over time, your whole lifestyle changes.
If you're ready to start your own change
You don't need to label yourself.
You don't need to commit to anything forever.
If you're in this for lifestyle, you don't need to think you have undone anything if you choose to have a drink on the journey you're on. It's a process and everything is a part of that. There are years of unpicking and understanding to do.
Just start with one thing that moves you closer to how you want to feel.
